Determined Admission Arrangements for Bede Academy for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019

The Bede Academy Admissions Policy determines admission to its places in Reception and Year 7:  90 for Primary Years and 195 for Secondary Years.   Places are offered to prospective Reception and Year 7 students at the same time as places are allocated within all other Northumberland schools.  Although Academies have been given the right to choose up to 10% of their Year 7 intake on ability, Bede Academy has refused to take up this means of selection, preferring a system which does not discriminate against a child on the basis of intelligence.

After the admission of pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs or Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) for whom Bede Academy has consented to be named on the Statement (evidence of this must be provided), the remaining places will be allocated in the following order priority:

  • Looked After Children (in public care) and previously Looked After Children
  • Children on whose behalf written evidence of exceptional medical or social need is presented, such evidence being supplied by a professionally involved third party and which must set out the particular reasons why the Academy is the most suitable school;
  • Children who have a sibling(s) who is already in the Academy.
Siblings are recognised as brothers, sisters, half-brothers, half-sisters, step-brothers and step sisters who reside permanently in the same household.
  • Children who live in the published catchment area for the Academy

(Please note that the catchment area for admission to the Primary Years (Reception to Year 6) is not the same as the catchment area for the Secondary Years (Years 7-11). The Secondary catchment is larger and includes all of the Primary catchment within it.)

  • Children, on the basis of the closeness of their home’s front door to the front gate of the Academy, measured by walking in the shortest possible line without entering private property.

(Walking distance must be along a safe walking public route, which does not include private short cuts or walk across open ground where there is no public right of way)

Please note that the catchment area for admission to the Primary Years (Reception to Year 6) is not the same as the catchment area for the Secondary Years (Years 7-11). The Secondary catchment is larger and includes all of the Primary catchment within it

Tie Break: Random allocation will be used as a tie-break to decide who has highest priority for admission if the distance between two children’s homes and the school is the same. This process will be independently verified.

Sixth Form Entry

Entry into the Sixth Form will be open to any student by submission of our 6th Form Application Form and an offer made subject to examination results at 16+, especially GCSE. The same priorities in decisions regarding oversubscription will exist as those in place for Years 7-11 and numbers are funded to a maximum of 350 in future Years 12 and 13 combined. External applicants at Year 12 will only be offered a place after all students from Bede Academy’s own Year 11 have had their destinations resolved.
