Dear Parents and Carers
You will be aware from the media that the government has announced today a new set of local COVID restrictions, which come into effect tomorrow across local authorities in the North East. A summary of the guidance can be viewed here: https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/coronavirus/Latest-information-and-advice-on-Coronavirus.aspx
There are two key points which we need to draw to your attention, which will impact directly on our academy community:
- ‘Unless exempt, in education settings where students in Year 7 and above are educated, including middle schools, face coverings should be worn by staff, visitors and students when moving around in corridors and communal areas.’
This means that as of tomorrow all students (secondary only), staff and visitors will be expected to wear a face covering when moving between lessons, in corridors or in all communal areas (including when arriving at, or leaving the academy and when out in the playground at break and lunch times). These must then be removed for lessons and when eating lunch. This does not apply to those who are exempt ie a medical care plan deems it unsafe to wear a mask. Staff are permitted to wear face visors when in classrooms. For staff and students face masks must be plain in colour and fully cover the mouth and nose.
Though secondary students are expected to bring their own plain face masks there will be a disposable mask available tomorrow, for anyone who arrives without one. All secondary students will be expected to bring their own face coverings from Monday 21st September. Government guidance on how to wear and dispose of a face covering can be found here.
- ‘You must not meet people who do not live with you, or are not part of your support bubble, either indoors or outdoors. You are advised not to share a car with those outside your household or support bubble, and to use public transport for essential journeys instead.’
This guidance applies to children as well as adults. At Bede Academy this means that all students, as well as parents and carers, must not congregate with others from other households (unless in a support bubble) to walk/travel to and from the academy, and must disperse at the end of the academy day. Parents and carers must ensure social distancing at all times and are required to wear a face covering whilst on the academy premises. This expectation applies to all on both the primary and secondary sites.
We know that this continues to be a challenging time for students, their families and our staff. These new restrictions are in place to continue to protect each of us in our community. As such we want to thank you in advance for your support which, throughout this crisis, has been exceptional.
