Update on Coronavirus: COVID-19

Further to the notices on the Academy’s website, we are writing to provide an update with regards the coronavirus infection. We continue to share with the students and staff at Bede the best way to reduce the risk of coronaviruses such as COVID-19 spreading is by ensuring good levels of hygiene.

The most important thing individuals can do to protect themselves remains washing their hands more often, for at least 20 seconds, with soap and water. Make sure you cough or sneeze into a tissue, put it in a bin and wash your hands.

Government guidance to schools

The Academy receives daily updates from Public Health England and the Department for Education. This guidance is published at the links below:

What to do if your child begins to develop even mild symptoms of coronavirus (fever – above 37.8 degrees and/or a new continuous cough.

Some of you may already be aware of the change in advice from the Government and Public Health England regarding the Coronavirus: COVID-19. This now states that if any one person in any household starts to display symptoms, everyone living there must stay at home for 14 days. If you are concerned that this might apply to you or one of your family members then please go to 111.nhs.uk/service/COVID-19/ and follow the advice that is provided. Advice was also given that people over the age of 70, other adults who would normally be advised to have the flu vaccine (such as those with chronic diseases) and pregnant women should also minimise their social contact.

Should you need to self-isolate then advice on how best to do this can be found here:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/

In the event of a confirmed case, the NHS and Public Health England will advise parents on the course of action to take, and where necessary, will contact the Academy to advise us on the actions that should be taken in school.

The Department for Education has launched a helpline for young people, parents and staff to raise questions about the coronavirus outbreak:

The Academy’s Senior Leadership Team is reviewing the government’s guidance daily, and will take all necessary action to protect the students and staff of the Academy, taking advice from Public Health England, the National Health Service, and the Departments for Health and Social Care and Education.

Communication with parents

The Academy will continue to keep parents and carers informed through the Academy website, ClarionCall text messages and through written communications, acting on the advice of the relevant public bodies. If you have changed your contact details, particularly your email address or mobile phone numbers recently then please make sure that you have made the Academy aware of this. If you have not yet done so please contact reception to update your details as soon as possible.

Communication with students

All students have been spoken to regarding good hand hygiene in assemblies and in tutor time (hand washing techniques for at least 20 seconds) and the NHS ‘Catch It, Bin It, Kill It’ advice. Information has been displayed around the Academy to remind students of this and further follow up lessons are planned by the Science Department to ensure that regular reminders are given.

The message from the Academy to students continues to be one of reassurance, and we trust that parents will support this message. As adults, we are able to recognise that some information shared on social media may be inaccurate but young people sometimes struggle to interpret these messages correctly. The BBC News website has published a helpful guide for parents speaking to young people about the current situation:

Public Examinations (Monday 11 May – Wednesday 24 June 2020)

As is the case each academic year all Year 11 and Year 13 students must ensure that they are available for exams throughout the exam period, up to and including Wednesday 24 June even if there is no public exam currently scheduled on this date. This is so that should any exams be re-arranged there is time for them to take place during the published examinations period.

Ofqual are working with the Joint Council for Qualifications and examination boards to ensure that preparations are in place for the management of the public examinations this summer should there be disruption caused by the Coronavirus. All Year 11 and Year 13 students should continue their preparations as normal for these important examinations. The Academy will continue to communicate with students and parents if any information to the contrary is received from the relevant public bodies.
